How Much Coconut Oil for Alzheimer's & Dementia?

Coconut and 2 bottles of coconut oil
VIDEO + INFO:

The dementia-fighting ingredient in coconut oil is MCT oil (oil made of Medium Chain Triglycerides). What are other healthy food sources? How much is a good daily amount to get the maximum benefit?

Check out the table, links and comments below the video for a better understanding of coconut oil's benefits for people with dementia.

Dr. Newport's Treatment for Her Husband

The following is not medical advice. Be sure to consult your physician before trying this yourself.
  1. Start by using one teaspoon of coconut oil in each meal.
  2. If available, us a mixture of 1/2 coconut oil and 1/2 MCT oil.
  3. Increase the amount gradually, protecting against side effects.
  4. Try to get as much as 3 tablespoons per meal and two tablespoons at bedtime.

  1. This is ridiculous. Dr. Newport is recommends consuming 3 tablespoons of coconut oil with every meal and two at bed time. That totals 11 tablespoons. At 120 calories per tablespoon, that totals 1,320 calories each day OF JUST COCONUT OIL. Add actual food to that, and your probably looking at consuming around 3,500 - 4,000 calories per day! Is she promoting brain health here, or OBESITY?

    1. No, she's not promoting obesity! It's proven! Dementia is essentially diabetes of the brain.Research it!

    2. Coconut oil is a healthy fat!

  2. That's a great point. Thanks. Perhaps that is another reason why Dr. Newport progressed from coconut oil to MCT oil. With MCT oil, you get 3 times the amount of MCT in each tablespoon, so you only get 1/3 the calories of coconut oil. At 1/3 the calories, it would be a pretty normal and healthful way to get the amount of MCT she recommends for fighting dementia.

  3. Exactly,Dementia/Alzheimer's is diabetes of the brain! Proven, it does work.

  4. What about Coconut Oil Capsules as a supplement. My mum refuses to feed my dad coconut oil from a spoon because she doesn't like the taste, so I bought capsules and suggested he start with one with breakfast and one with dinner at 1000 mg each? I have also started taking them morning and night as hopefully a preventative measure.

    1. Capsules seem better than nothing. At the same time, looking at Amazon.com, it looks like the typical capsules has 1000 mg, or in other words, 1 gram of coconut oil. So it would take about 15 capsules to get the same benefits as one tablespoon of coconut oil.

Maybe it would be worth trying MCT ooil capsules. At triple the punch, you would only need five capsules to get that effect, according to how I understand Dr. Newport.

    2. Put the coconut oil on their peanut butter toast or other semisweet food. It does not taste bad.

    3. I spread coconut oil on my wife's toast and mine too with peanut butter and jelly and it's delicious! I also put a half tablespoon in her tea and she doesn't seem to mind at all. Her tea is green tea with pomegranate.

    4. I put it in the water I make my husbands oatmeal with.

  5. I add 1 Tbsp of organic coconut oil to my oatmeal every morning. I've also added it to my homemade cafe mocha & it tastes very much like Starbucks :-)

  6. This site keeps promoting Dr, Newport and coconut oil. Dr. Newport herself has stopped her promotions since her husband Steve had a serious health setback. Contrasted with all the earlier hype about Steve, little has been reported on this. But from what information is available, it's possible that his setback could be related to the high-caloric coconut oil consumption.

    1. This site reports on coconut oil because literally hundreds of our readers keep recommending it. We receive almost nothing negative about it. We don't "promote" it, but it is our duty to inform and educate our readers about any dementia therapy that has such a large, long-lasting, consistently positive grass-roots following. To sum it up, coconut oil is a food therapy advocated by a large base of people who actually live with dementia.

    2. About one year ago, Steve began having seizures which occur in about 1/3 of Alzheimer's patients eventually...not related to coconut oil. He fell straight back and hit his head with the first seizures. I wouldn't trade the extra three or so better quality years we had as a result of coconut oil even if Alzheimer's wins in the end. I have personally heard from about 400 people who have benefited, most with dementia, at least 35 with Parkinson's and other neurodegenerative disorders, some now stable for two to four years. It is a dietary intervention...it is your choice.

  7. thanks, Dr Newport! My Mom is now in a very confused stage of Alz, and my Dad is thinking of admitting her to a home for help. It is very sad, but we all want the best care for this once very active woman of 10 kids!

    1. Mary Ann, Don't hesitate to look at the meds that your mom is on. My mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's/early onset Dementia, and at the time she was having 3-4 day bouts of screaming, crying fits and very confused. After researching her meds, I found out that these patients can be overly sensitive to anti-depressants, which her Dr. placed her on to deal with depression. After slowly weaning her off of the anti-depressant over a 2 month period (which her Dr. did not want to do due to the fact that they said it could make her symptoms worse) and the use of coconut oil, my mom's screaming rages have subsided; although, this did not happen right away due to the fact that the meds were still in her system. There were days when I was ready to re-up her dose hoping to make things better. I stuck it out and it was worth it. I have found that mental stimulus, i.e. socializing in small groups (so as not to overwhelm her) and physical contact really help with keeping her grounded and focused. I am preparing to add curcumin (turmeric root) and ground pepper to her diet as it is supposed to work well, too. There are a lot of recipes online. There's 1 for a coconut milk, pineapple, banana smoothie, where you add a small dose of the curcumin and pepper. It sounds wonderful! Good luck!

    2. Totally agree with Becky, stripping away meds can be very helpful indeed.

    3. Some time ago I read that adding a similar amount cinnamon and mixing in several drops of castor oil enhances the effect of the curcumin by many times. And a few weeks ago was the recommendation to add ground black pepper to curcumin, at 10% of the amount. I've taking all of them as a paste for a few months now. No negative effects whatsoever, apart the occasional laxative effect of castor oil, and no flu, colds, or whatever this winter. (I'm 77 and also keep fit and 4 months ago started a Ketogenic diet.)

  8. I developed Dementia symptoms after taking the pain med Lyrica. I pulled myself off of it and now I am ok. The med did not help my pain anyway so it was useless for that problem. I will try the coconut oil and maybe it will give me a few years extra!

Does lyrica made the alzheimer's dementia disease worsen.
Can she low the the dose
      Of lyrica from 2× 150mg to 2x 75mg ?

  9. It is well documented in the lasts 40 years of research with AD and others dementias , by hundred of research articles that age-related dementias , that at the molecular, metabolical and biochemical level , the peroxinitrites accumulation, the mitochondrial disorders, the glycation ,the heavy metal accumulation, the brain energy depribvation, the neuroinflammation ,looks to be disorders that are the triggers and are too the disorders that perpetuates dementias , leading to the cognitive, mood and behavior disorders.
My question is : why to choose only "ONE" or "THE" supplement , or "THE" nutraceutical or "THE" drug to treat so complex diseases ?

What about instead to gives so high doses of Only One or two supplements , what about to Associate Small Doses of Different Supplements, to Increases the good effects and to Lowers the side effects ?
What about to use very small doses of supplements or nutraceuticals that works in that disorders described above , as association of Small doses of COCONUT OIL (as Only one Tea spoon three times a day -can be complemented with massages in the thin skin of the arms of elderly patinets once coconut oil has a very good trans-cutaneous absortion), with small doses of ACETYL L CARNITINE (so called ALCAR) (as doses of eighty miligrams to one hundred miligrams three times a day-Only under physician prescription) small doses of CARNOSINE (as doses of eighty miligrams to one hundred miligrams three times a day-Only under physician prescription), and associated to small doses of GLUCURONOLACTONE (as 200 miligrams three times a day- Only under physician prescription). While coconut oil gives an input of energy with it medium-chain triglycerides , Acetyl L Carnitine increases and enhances the metabolization of both , the medium-chain triglycerides and the long-chain triglycerides. As coconut oil it perfect "match" , the ALCAR is a peroxinitrites scavengers and works too as alternative fuel . Acetyl L carnitine , improves mitochondrial function and mainly improves the metabolization of glucose by the neuron cells, as does with muscle cells.

And ACETYL L CARNITINE, CARNOSINE AND GLUCURONOLACTONE , in the very small doses above are : peroxinitrites scavengers, mitochondrial improvers, anti-glycation supplements, mild heavy metal chelators (all three supllements are mild chelators of Excess of copper ,for example),improves brain energy, control neuroinflammation ,etc.

Using the association of supplements described above, all in very small doses, we can optimize it effects , geting synergism, lowering the toxic effect of higher doses of such supplements. I've seen the association of that small doses of such supplements ,Empirically , but only under Physician supervision and/or prescription working very well to enhances cognition and mood , and helping to control delusions, hallucinations, sundowning, agressiviness, etc.

  10. ACCORDING THE REFERENCE ARTICLE BELLOW , ACETYL-L-CARNITINE LOOKS TO HAS SYNERGISTIC EFFECTS WITH MEDIUM-CHAIN TRIGLYCERIDES (fatty acids) AS THE EXTRA VIRGIN COCONUT OIL, etc.,INCREASING THE BRAIN ENERGY and the energy to the whole body.
BUT ONLY IN VERY SMALL DOSES OF BOTH SUPPLEMENTS , AND ONLY UNDER PHYSICIAN PRESCRIPTION AND SUPERVISION.
Based in the article : Carnitine Supplementation and Ketogenesis by Small-For-Date Neonates on Medium- and Long-Chain Fatty Acid Formulae , published in the Journal Bology of Neonate , 2000 ,authors Labadaridis J ., where we can read that: " Carnitine is a key molecule in energy production from various substrates.Although it is generally believed that it plays no role in the metabolism of medium-chain triglycerides, quite a few data exist to the contrary. In the present study we investigated the effect of carnitine on ketogenesis in small-for-date neonates fed formulae of equal caloric value and fat content that was predominantly long-chain triglycerides or medium-chain triglycerides (46% of total fat).According to our results there was a statistically significant interaction between carnitine and the chain length of the administered fat with respect to ketone production.Increased ketogenesis was only shown by the neonates receiving medium-chain triglycerides and carnitine. Our results provide further evidence for the involvement of carnitine in medium-chain triglyceride metabolism."

  11. Is there a specific type if Coconut Oil to use? I have Organic Virgin (cold pressed/unrefined). Do those buzz words matter? Does it make a difference whether it's virgin ir not?

    1. As far as I understand it, the key in treating dementia is that the oil should have as much MCT oil in it as possible. So 100% Coconut Oil is good. 100% MCT Oil is better. I think the key is to just make sure that if you are going with coconut oil, that it be 100% pure coconut oil. There might be unrelated health benefits to things like "Organic", "Pressed", "Unrefined". However, those features are not connected to how well coconut oil works as a backup fuel in dementia.
